True love exists… just visit a nursing home.
Scene: Family meeting with the wife of a patient to discuss her husband’s prognosis. The prognosis is not good. Hospice services were discussed. It was a very serious and sad meeting.
Dr. B: I know this is hard, but you need to listen and respect your husband’s wishes. He does not want the tube feeding. Hospice will allow him to be comfortable and be at home with you.
Wife: I know. I know. We’ve been married for 53 years doctor. I love my husband and want the best for him, even if it means losing him. I spoke with him and he told me he does not want the tube feeding and that he is tired. He told me he does not want to die. I do no want him to die. I love him too much to let him go. He is my best friend. (She continues to talk about their love for another and how he is such a good man. How dedicated they both have been to their marriage “till death do we part”). If he dies, I will too.
Crying ensues. End scene.
These “coming to Jesus” meetings as the doctor puts it are never easy. Each time, I cry. The problem is, I do not know how to stop…sometimes. I know it’s because I bottle up all my emotions and when moments like this happens, everything comes pouring out. Sometimes, a good cry like this helps ease the stress/pain I am not able to release when I run. Sigh.
